Spain celebrates 30 years as a world-leading Blue Flag beach destination

26 06, 2023

There can be no doubt about Spain's position as the world's leading beach destination. The Iberian country has just received 627 blue flags for its beaches, another 97 for its marinas and five for its tourist boats. The figures mean Spain maintains its position as having more Blue Flags than any other country, continuing a winning streak that has spanned 30 years.

But what is Blue Flag?

In a sentence, Blue Flag means quality. It is an award given to beaches that meet a series of criteria of quality, safety, hygiene, service provision and care for the environment. They can also be granted to ports and even boats. Spain is the leader of the 49 countries that use this system to measure beach quality since 1987.

In Spain, the Valencian community has more Blue Flags than any other region, with 153 Blue Flags. It is followed by Andalusia, with 148 Blue Flags, followed by Galicia with 125 and Catalonia with 120 Blue Flags.

“Spain's reputation as a world leader in the quality of its beaches is a major tourist attraction. Spanish beaches attract tourists from all over the globe as well as second home owners who want to live by the sea.”

For the past 65 years, leading Spanish housebuilder Taylor Wimpey España has been selling homes along the Spanish coast. The firm reports that health and wellness considerations are often top of mind for those buying coastal property. Both sea air and sea swimming can provide physical health benefits as well as a mental health boost. Being close to the sea can reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.

Coastal living also offers a number of outdoor opportunities not available to the landlocked. Swimming, surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and more can all be great ways to stay fit and active.

“Scenic views are another reason why properties by the sea are so popular. There is something infinitely refreshing about seeing the sunlight glinting across the waves - it helps calm the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. The beauty of how the colors of the sea change through the seasons is also something that many with coastal views value.”
